Winner of the Miami AIA 2017 Unbuilt Award

The Copper Stitch is a retail infill project in Miami. The two lots are divided – one small lot is fronting NE 1st Street and the other lots are grouped together on NE 39th  Street. Our client wanted a way of connecting the two sites and a memorable design that was also discreet, in keeping with the aesthetic of the Miami Design District’s mix of luxury shops and restaurants. We also wanted to design a focal point on the street that would be activated at night and “glow” softly.

This exploration of the many ways to use copper material (perforated rainscreen, burnished softly reflective panels, copper fascia) was a major inspiration for the project. We wanted to differentiate the building with a distinctive, warm material that was rich enough in its materiality to hold its own with the adjacent luxury retailers.
