The site’s previous structure, described as a “rather non-descript building” by the City of Miami Beach’s Preservation Director, had limited historic documentation available, and multiple renovations had left little of its original design.
The Miami Beach Design Preservation League and a majority of the Historic Preservation Board, concerned about the “chipping away at the historic district,” initially objected to the demolition of a building considered to be part of the historic fabric of Lincoln Road.
The challenge was to design a building on that site that respected and honored the past but still looked forward. The building we designed was an evolution of the original Streamline Modern structure; it kept the historic elements and incorporated them into the overall design.
