Multi-Family & Mixed-Use

VITRI

The concept for VITRI was to design a mixed-use residential and commercial building to serve as the entry threshold to Miami Beach. The residential program sits on top of the retail areas and overhangs it to create a sheltered area along the street. This part of the building consists of two contrasting forms: a curved, crystalline shape that follows the curvature of the nearby bay, facing Downtown Miami and a rectilinear shape that points toward Miami Beach.

The palette for the buildings is inspired by the two distinct environments that make Miami Beach unique—the natural and the man-made. The façade facing West Avenue derives inspiration from the beach, drawing shapes and colors from the sky, sand, and sea. The body of the first volume also evokes the ocean with its curving, wavelike concrete frame that encloses facets slipping out towards the water views. The glass portions allow light to seep in and change the colors of the structure.

The Alton Road façade, however, is inspired by the built landscape of the City of Miami Beach. The materials therefore reflect a more modernist aesthetic composed of steel, glass, and concrete. This part of the building relies on the play of colors and light from the glass elements arranged in an irregular grid, creating a dynamic façade that mirrors the diverse mosaic of the city. Itis eclectic, exuberant, yet nonetheless contained in a rectilinear volume. Not only are spectacular views of Miami Beach accessible from this building, but VITRI itself becomes a microcosm of the city’s landscape.
