Cat Cay Residence

The client-given name of the house, “Out of the Blue,” was inspired by the many vibrant shades of blue characteristic of vibrant Cat Cay’s sea. The nature-inspired palette connects the house to the local beauty of the island: relaxing white and pastel blue walls contrast the vivid colors of the tropical seas and gardens.

The house features Bahamian shutters, porches, breezeways, native keystone, and volume ceilings with wood cladding—all elements with roots in Bahamian tradition. The modern feel of the house is best highlighted by the openness of the Great Room, the immediacy of the connection to the dramatic reflecting pool outdoors, and the simple concrete decks perched above the rocks and beach below. Sliding doors in the main space retract to allow for 20 feet of gorgeous, uninterrupted ocean views.

The Bahamian roots of the house also provide several important resiliency features. Cross ventilation allows for natural airflow into public spaces and makes AC optional during much of the year. Elevated decks and shady porches contribute to this resiliency as they capture ocean breezes and block the sun, respectively.

Care was taken to use materials that are easily maintained despite the harsh marine environment, ensuring that relaxation is the top priority of this residence. This tropical beach house is designed to be enjoyed with family and friends.
