Mar de Indias, Cartagena
Located in Cartagena, Colombia, Mar de Indias Resort is situated on an 18-hole championship resort golf course with ocean views. In collaboration with Ron Garl, who designed the golf course, we developed a series of residences, condos, and a hotel situated along the site’s beautiful landscape of rolling hills and ocean.
The Hillside Estate homes are tropical modern structures with expansive stone decks, large outdoor rooms, and follies that recall the architectural history of Colombia’s haciendas.
The Mangrove Bungalows are designed to provide guests with a private and serene retreat by the water, enhanced by the natural landscape and foliage of the wetlands. The bungalows are modeled after the vernacular of Colombian casitas utilizing beautiful and local coralina, limestone, and wood. The interior millwork conceals modern technological comforts to create a true tropical hideaway retreat.
The hotel is designed as a series of tropical courtyard structures with views and access to the ocean. Persianas and balconies give the modern architecture a rich, tropical atmosphere that echoes Cartagena’s roots. Traditional features of Colombian architecture are reinterpreted in coral-rock walls, wood beam ceilings, studded wooden doors, and beautiful metal work juxtaposing the modern expanses of glass.
